The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a sub story graphic novel style that in which you play as Chris and he is his alter ego as Captain Spirit where he uses his imagination to go about daily chores around his home.  The game is designed to be a prequel style for the upcoming Life is Strange 2 game that will be released later this year.

General Gameplay

As how the other Life is Strange games are set up.  You explore your environment and interact with people, objects and other items in the game.  You then chose what to do next and as the actions that you decide will either have positive or negative conquests in the game story.  As the game is set up to be a prequel to the Life is Strange 2 game.  The choices that you make will have an impact in the upcoming game.  The Game Visuals are very detail and vivid.  Everything from the character animation and background are very detailed and easily able to be seen in the game.  This is one of the best-looking games in both 4K and 1080P.  As the game is more like a graphic novel, the graphics must be on point and they are in the game.  For those that have gamers in your gaming family that are colorblind or have harder time seeing colors, do not worry as the colors in the game can be easily be seen.  In our playthrough, outside of some language inn the subtitles there was nothing that would be offensive to any gamer.  Again, remember that the game is more of storytelling so there would be some elements of more mature material in the game.  Parents, please use caution when allowing younger gamers play the game.  Audio in The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is well done.  The voice acting is very well done, and the voice actors make the story come alive.  The sound effects in the game match onto what is going on in the game.  In our playthrough, we had a great time playing the game as everything had a place and the sound fit everything that was going on the screen.  Everything is so well done that at times I forgot that I was playing a game and just watching an animated short story.  As the game is more story based the game sounds fantastic in a surround sound environment or even in a headset.   In our playthrough we did hear some language like the F-Bomb being dropped but again as the game is more story driven the language fits more into the storytelling of the game.  Parents/Guardians please use caution when having the audio up around smaller gamers because of this.  The Controls for The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit are very easy.  The left thumb stick controls the character and the right one is used to look around and see.  The controller buttons are used for the actions that are being asked on screen.  The game is designed to be very easy for anyone to pick up and play.  As the game is more story driven there is no hard controller setting to learn and easy to enjoy.  In our playtesting we did not encounter any issues with the game or the controller settings.  Everyone in our gaming family from young to old was able to start and finish the game without any controller issues.  As the game is very easy to play, there is no need for any special type of controller to be used.

“Take a great story filled with imagination and tragedy from a 10 years old point of view and you get this masterpiece of a story”

Family Friendly

This is an interesting game, as for anyone that has played any of the Life is Strange series that they never shy away from tackling any topic and this game is no exception.  The dynamic between father and son, loss and how both cope with it is a great stage for the fantastic storytelling that will become the story for Life is Strange 2.  When we were playtesting the game here at the office at times I can see from some of the families that we work with some uncomfortable with the topic.  Again, this is nothing new but for gamers that are looking for a happy story, understand with the happiness that you see there is an underlining of sadness and loss.  This is where the beauty of the game comes out.  You as Chris go about your day just like young child, playing with your toys and letting your imagination run wild.  Turning mundane chores into adventures is what makes this prequel such a great story.  Now you’re asking yourself why is this a great game for your digital library?  Well the answer is simply that if you are a Life is Strange fan or even a fan of a great story driven game, this must be a game in your digital library.  Also, the game is free on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.  The only concern that we had when playing the game was that for anyone that had to deal with a abusive parent that this may hit a little close to home, however that being said, it would be best to play with your gaming family to see for yourself.  In our special needs game testing we did not encounter any issues with the games graphic, sound, control or anything else.  All in our gaming family were able to pick up and play the game.  The only thing that we were a little concern about was the language in the game, but it is minor and not used as often.

Closing

If you are a fan of the Life is Strange series or not, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a must have for your digital library.  The story itself set up a great introduction to the next game and believe me this is one game that you must play and experience for yourself.

Good

  • Great story that brings you into the world of Chris and what he is going through.
  • Fantastic soundtrack that fits right for the game.
  • Easy controls that allow anyone to pick up and play the game.
  • A great tie in for the next game in the series.
  • Seeing the dynamic of love, loss and tragedy between father and son is beautiful and sad at the same time.

Bad

  • Some language but not enough to turn away younger gamers.
  • Short. Around 1-2 hours of gameplay.
