Random Heroes: Gold Edition

An alien invasion has started, and you and other “heroes” must save the world in this 8-bit inspired 2D side scroller shooter.  Take the role of different characters, and different weapons to stop the aliens.

General Gameplay

Random Heroes: Gold Edition is an action/platformer shooter where you go from level to level, defeating enemies, collecting coins for weapons and reaching the area last level for a boss battle.  The Game Visuals are created in a bright color pallet where everything is bright and easy to see.  As the game is an 8-bit style of graphics, the game is pixelated to mimic the 8-bit era of gaming.  The game graphics are quite easy to see on the screen.  The game does not offer a colorblind mode; however, it is not needed as the game colors are easily seen on the screen.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics as they are very family friendly.  Audio in the game is also 8-bit gaming era in its presentation.  As you would expect from a shooter, you will hear weapons fire, jumping, attacks and other background sounds that come with a game like this.  The background music is in a standard midi style soundtrack that during gameplay is not very noticeable outside of it being there for the level.  The game is presented in a stereo 2.0 format and easily heard on either a surround sound or even just the regular speakers.  In our playtesting, the audio from the game was very simple but effective to hear and there was nothing offensive to hear for younger gamers.  Controls are also simple but effective in Random Heroes: Gold Edition.  The left thumb stick moves the character and there is a button to fire the weapon, and a jump button.  The controls in the game are quite sharp and responsive, which is needed for a platform/shooter like this. This controller setup makes it easy for anyone to pick up and play the game without any trouble.  In our playtesting, we did not run into any issues with the controls or even the controller setup.  The game can be played with the standard controller and there is no need for a special controller.

“A simple and fun, family friendly shooter.  What makes Random Heroes: Gold Edition fun is the cast of different heroes and weapons that you can collect throughout the game.”

Family Friendly

One of the key things that makes Random Heroes: Gold Edition fun is that the game is quite easy to approach for any type of gamer.  Easy gameplay, controls, and understanding of how to play is what makes this a great game for all members of the gaming family to play.  Yes, it is at its core a simple 2D side scroller shooter, but the ability to earn coin on each level to get more and better weapons and doing well on each level unlocks new characters to use in playthroughs.  This alone makes the game fun to replay using different characters and weapons.  Also, the boss battles are not to challenging and once you see the pattern of the bosses attack you can then create the best strategy to defect them.  There are some challenging platforming areas but not hard to overcome.  There are some hidden areas in the game to find more coins and other health upgrades to give you an more advantage in the game.  The simple nature alone of the game is a fun game for younger gamers to play or even for gamers that want to take a break from other games and play.  There are over 9 chapters with multiple levels, and 8 heroes to obtain so there is some length to the game livelihood.   Now we will admit that this is a simpler shooter, so gamers that are looking for an more detail and challenging shooter may want to look elsewhere for an more challenging game.  In our playtesting, all of our testers had a fun time playing the game but like we said that the gamers that love more challenging shooters felt that it was to elementary for their taste, however if you are in the market for a simple, cheap shooter then Random Heroes: Gold Edition is a good pick up for your digital library.  The only complaint that we had was that there were at times that seeing below or above for jumps were a little hard to see but this does not break gameplay.  In our special needs game testing, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics, audio, or even controller settings, the game in its design is very special needs gaming friendly.

Closing

With multiple levels, characters, simple gameplay and overall easy family fun, Random Heroes: Gold Edition is a great family friendly game, however gamers looking for more of a challenge may not like the simplistic gameplay of this game.
