Laser League

Take a futuristic game arena, a 3-on-3 match setting in which you must use laser walls to beat the other team and a lot of teamwork in this very solid multiplayer and you have Laser League.

General Gameplay

Laser League is a 3 vs 3 team game in which you set up laser walls that you use to defeat your opponent and win matches.  There are grids around the arena that you can use and set up the walls to trap your opponent.  They also move so it adds a more detail strategy in which you work with your team to set up the best offense.  You can also pick up power ups that allow the laser walls to move faster, switch colors and other arena effects.  You also pick different classes from shockers to shield and medic to help your team.  The Game Visuals are very neon in its presentation.  With lots of reds, blues, yellows on a black background.  Imagine the movie Tron and this is how the game visuals are.  The game characters are very detailed and can be seen on the screen (we did have some tracking issues during our game testing, but we will cover this in our family friendly section) the general level design is also very easy to see what is going on and what you need to do.  As the game is in more multiplayer nature, all the objects are also very easy to tell what and on the screen the colors are very bright.  As the game does not support a color-blind mode, it is not needed as the game colors are bright enough to see and tell which what color is.  One thing that I will mention is that the game moves very fast.  Due to the nature of the game being an online e-sport style of game, it is better to play on a larger SMART TV, or monitor.  The game Audio is very sports in its sound.  With crowd noise, cheering and the general sci-fi sounds that you would find in a futuristic style of game.  There is a light background music in the menus as well gameplay, but this is easily ignored because of the fast pace of the gameplay.  The sound effects and announcer are very clear and critical as when in a match you need to hear what is going on and adjust to the action on the screen.  In our playtesting we did not run into any issues with the game audio, sound effects or even general audio that would be offensive to any gamer in your gaming family.  However, as we were playing the game, parents please be aware that online play that there are people that can use colorful language so please watch your family gamers when playing online with a headset.  Controls for Laser League are set up to be more of a sports style of controller setup, as the left thumb stick moves your character, you have a button to use your power up, and also to activate the areas to set up your laser walls.  The controls fit this style of gameplay and in our play testing none of our gamers had any issues with the controls.  As the game is designed for both console play as well PC, the default controller that you have should be fine and there is no need for any type of special controller for the game.

“Laser League is fun, fast pace game in which teamwork is just as important as picking your class in the game, however the action can get to fast for some gamers.”

Family Friendly

I can say this, Laser League is a fun game, and in our playtesting here at the office, everyone that took part of the game testing had a great time, but there were some concerns about the game. Nothing serious but some things that needed to be aired out in our review.  Camille, one of our senior reviewer as well some older game reviewers had a hard time following the action and got frustrated with the game.  Now does this make Laser League a bad game, no, however more of an acquired taste in games like this.  Laser League action is very fast paced in its nature, after all it is a e-sports style of game. If anything, Laser League is a great game for any gaming family members that love games like Rocket League as it encourages you to play as a team, have a sound strategy and very easy to pick up and play.  The game does not have an offline mode, expect for just singles play, so a majority of the gaming would be done online, so parents if you are comfortable with your gaming family playing online and they are a fan of games like this, Laser League would be a great game for your digital library.  Now in our special needs game testing, we did not run into any issues with the game graphics, sound, control or even general gameplay, expect for some gamers that the action was a little too fast to keep up with.  The only complaint was that on smaller screens that it was harder to see what was going on but if you are gaming on a 37” or larger Smart TV you should be ok.  We believe that this game is a great game for children and teen to play with their peers online and start a squad to play others.  One of the things that we saw was that Laser League creates a sense of teamwork when teens play with other teens and form a team online.  This encourages gamers, even shy ones to work with others to win a match and the best part is that it helps people crack out of their shell and be more social, so when a game helps encourages this we are all on board!
