Play as a cat in a mech shoot in this Metroid inspired style adventure game where you must help you human from crashing onto alien world and find out what is going on with the alien outbreak.
General Gameplay
Gato Roboto is a Metroid style of game where you play as a cat and go into different zones to find new power ups, abilities and other secrets to help your human pilot that crashed and cannot get out of his ship. The game is all about exploration of the game world and using new acquired abilities to reach other areas, those that have played any type of Metroid game will be right at home with this great game. The Game Visuals are presented in black and white. The game is like playing an old school game on the original Game Boy from years ago. Graphics are drawn in a pixel style where it is incredibly detailed to see what is going on and tell what the enemy is, to background and other game assets. Gato Roboto is extremely easy to see on any screen and play the game. The game story is told via text and the text on the screen is quite easy to read during gameplay. The game does have a “color mode” (we will go more into this in our Family Friendly section of the review) and as the game does not offer a colorblind mode, there is no difficulty for anyone with a colorblind type to play the game. In our play testing, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics. Audio in Gato Roboto is also very 8-bit in its audio design. The game in its design and gameplay nature is to be a throwback of 8-bit gaming. As you would expect from a game like this, all the 8-bit sounds from weapons fire, to background music, enemy sounds and boss battles. The game does not have spoken dialog but more of a babble when the characters are talking, and the story is told by text on the screen. The background audio matches the areas that you are in and creates the feel of 8-bit gaming. The game is in 5.1 surround sound as well 2.0 stereo sound, and honestly its sounds fine in either sound settings. In our play testing, we did not run into any issues with the audio. Controls for Gato Roboto are quite simple to control. The left thumb stick controls the cat/mech/character and there is a button to use your primary weapon and a jump button. As you go through the game more abilities and power ups will be assigned to the controller. The game is very user friendly and easy to control. As the game is a standard game, there is no need for a special controller to be used for the game and the standard controller for the console that you play on is fine for the game.

Family Friendly
One thing about games that are based on the design of the original Metroid are that some can be great and become a cult classic amongst gamers while others can become disasters because they cannot get the elements right of the Metroid style of gaming. Well we are happy to say that Gato Roboto gets all this right. In Metroid style of games, having a good balance of gaming, exploration, upgrades and the curiosity of going back to different areas to explore unreachable areas is what makes this game a fun and easy for both experienced gamers in Metroid style of games as well newcomers to the series. Gato Roboto is also a cute game in its design as you are a cat in a mech suit. The game is not hard or easy, but the balance of the game difficulty is just about right. The gameplay is fun, the controls are tight and the enemies are not to hard or challenging to fight in the game, but we did see some boss battles where it can get difficult without the correct upgrades or even a sound counter attack against some of the battles. One other thing that we liked was that the cat, Kiki can venture outside of the mech suit and explore areas where the mech suit cannot travel (small crawl spaces, water) This type of interaction in the game adds more of an new dynamic of exploration in the game and at times an new element into how the game is played without a power up mech and Kiki that can be defeated by one hit. Now when it comes to the colors in the game. The game does have colors, but the way you can colorize the game is by finding cartridges that are scattered in the game. There is a total of 14 of them and each one allows a different set of colors to be applied to the game for a certain effect. Again, the game is more meant to be played as an old school game and the color pallets are just there for fun. Overall, Gato Roboto is a fun game for all ages. It offers a great adventure game with lots of actions and exploration. Great boss battles and there is even a cute cat in the game. In our special needs game testing, we did not have any issues with the game graphics, audio, or even controls. The game is very special needs gaming friendly. The only complaint that we had was that some of the boss encounters can get hard for non-adventure gamers at first till you learn the patterns of the boss at the encounter to better defeat him.
Closing
Gato Roboto is a fun Metroid style game where any fan of this type of gaming series will love. Easy controls, great music and graphics that are a throwback to the 80’s style of Gameboy are some bonuses of this wonderful game. A must have for your digital library.
