You, Pancake a flying cupcake must protect your girlfriend Cherry from hungry flies and other enemies in this twin stick shooter.  The game features very colorful 2D art as well custom generated levels in which no two levels are the same.

General Gameplay

Birdcakes is 2D a twin stick shooter at its core and it is a fun shooter.  We will go into more why you should have this shooter in your digital library in our Family Friendly section but let’s go over the general cores to this game.  The Game Visuals are in a colorful 2D artful way.  The characters, enemies and backgrounds are very vivid and detailed down to the characters itself.  If anything, the game looks beautiful in motion.  The game has more of a visual that would be compared to a cartoon with the characters being very animated and come to life on the screen.  As the game does not support a colorblind more, there was no trouble with our gamers that are colorblind to play the game and see the colors on the screen.  In our playtesting we did not run into anything offensive in the game, again it is like watching a cartoon in the way the game is displayed.   The game Audio is done in a cartoony style in its sound.  Birdcakes background music is a great styling of upbeat jazz that fits the game very well.  The sound effects from frying your “weapon” to enemy sounds of the bull fly rushing you sound like it is a cartoon that you would be watching, all in the game sounds match and fit what is going on the screen.  In our playtesting we did not find anything offensive at all, if anything it was very comical, and a lot of our testers really liked the audio from the game.  The game is not in 5.1 surround sound but that is ok as the audio sounds fine in any listening setting.  Controls for Birdcakes are very simple to use and play.  As the game is a twin stick shooter, the game controller layout is very simple.  The left thumb stick controls Pancake, the right one is to aim and shoot, there is a button for a screen attack and another one to grab sugar cubes to use in the level.  In our playtesting, we did not run into any issues with the controller setup and found it very easy to use and understand.  If anything, non-shooter fans were able to pick up and play the game without any trouble.  There is no need to use a special type of controller for the game as the default one is perfect for the game.

“The art style, music and gameplay is what makes Birdcakes a fun game to have in your digital library. There is something for both shooter and non-shooter fan in this game.”

Family Friendly

Honestly if you are or not even a shooter fan, Birdcakes is a game that is a must have for your digital library.  The game is a fun game to play for all, young to old.  It is not to hard and the challenge builds with you as your skills grow in the game.  Yes, there is a permadeath in the game and you will have to start over in the game when you fail a level, however you are able to take the credits that you earn in playthroughs and apply it to better items that will help your character grow.  Now before this sounds like a turn off, it is not as it adds a lot of replay value to the game.  The game encourages you to play, collect funds to get better power ups and then go through and see how far you can get.  Not only this is a great system, but it allows the gamer to enjoy the different style of enemies that are in later levels but better to plan out a plan of attack for later levels.  The power ups are unique enough to keep gamers busy and not get boring. The game has waves of enemies, then is boss battle in which you must defeat the boss before it reaches Cherry. There are sugar cubes around the level that you can use as either a weapon or to block off Cherry, this also add a tower like defense style of strategy to the game. All that took part of the game testing here in the office had a blast and we were especially surprise that non-shooter fans really enjoyed the game.  From our younger gamers to older gamers had a great time playing the game and really enjoyed Birdcakes.  In our special needs game testing, we did not run into any issues with the Game Visuals, Audio, or even the Controller settings.  If anything, everyone loved the game visuals and audio (when Pancake gets hit, he lets out this funny scream that you just have to hear, lol)  The only complaint that we had, if you can even call it one was that we wished that there was a co-op or even a multiplayer to the game, but hoping that Birdcakes 2 will have this.

Closing

Birdcakes is a game that is a must have for shooter and non-shooters alike.  With its great visuals, fantastic audio and easy controls it is a fun family game for all to enjoy!
