Task Force Kampas

Play as a team of outcast that must save their friends and the universe from an evil invasion of aliens that want to send the universe into corruption.  Task Force Kampas is an old school Japanese shoot’em up that takes a unique approach to shooters.

As this game is rated M – For Mature we only allowed older testers to review this game.

General Gameplay

Task Force Kampas is an old school 2D top down shooter with lots of enemies and flashing colors. The game allows you to choose different ships that offer different traits that cater to your gaming style.  The Game Visuals are very bright and flashy on the screen.  With an 8-bit style to its visual design a bright color on the screen.  Everything on the screen is easy to see from the background to enemies and your ship.  The game can get chaotic with the colors flashing and when there are lots of enemies and bullets on the screen it can get a little hard to follow the action on the screen, but as this is a shooter this is expected.  The game offers an epilepsy warning at the beginning, and those are sensitive to fast flashing lights may want to watch video of the gameplay first before playing the game. Task Force Kanpas does not offer a colorblind mode, however it is not needed as the colors are bright enough to see on the screen.  In our play testing, outside of the light sensitive warning, we did not encounter any issues with the graphics of the game.  Audio in Task Force is a great blend of a techno/synthwave soundtrack.  The background music matches so well with the gameplay that it is just a joy just to hear the soundtrack.  As the game is a shooter, you will hear the standard basic sounds like bullets firing, enemy weapons fire, bosses and other sounds that come with a shooter.  The game was rated M – For Mature because of language (however we will go over this in more detail and why the rating should be changed in our Family Friendly Section) The game is presented in 5.1 surround sound as well 2.0 stereo sound as well.  We recommend if you have a gaming headset that you should use it to hear the great audio from this game.  In our play testing, we did not hear anything offensive in the game soundtrack, again as the game is rated M – for Mature because of language, we will touch on this matter more in the review.  Controls for Task Force Kampus are quite simple and easy to pick up and play the game.  The left thumb stick controls the ship and one controller face button is used to fire the weapon.  Again, this is an 8-bit style shooter so the controller setup if perfect for a game like this.  In our play testing, we did not see any issues with the game controller settings or general controls.  The game is very family friendly for all types of gamers to play without any problems.

“Task Force Kampus is simply an old school shooter that is fun to play.  With a great techno/sync soundtrack, this is a game that no shooter fan should miss.”

Family Friendly

Task Force Kampus is an old relic from the arcade day of shooters where how far can you get on just one credit.  These was the days where true skills will show in your local arcade to see how far you can get and this is where the game got this right.  Overall, the game is quite easy to play, and the graphics alone are fun to see in motion.   The music in the game is such a treat to hear during the game and honestly, playing the game alone is worth to hear the soundtrack.  Now there was some issues with the game getting a M – For Mature rating, now during our play through of the game we did not encounter anything that would make the game deserving of the M – For Mature rating.  The graphics and overall look and feel of the game is very family friendly but only and only part of the game where the final boss track contains a some language, and even then it is not enough to make the game mature only for gamers in our personal opinion. If anything, the game with just one f-bomb dropped should at least deserved a T – For Teen rating but we wanted to point this out to any parents/guardians reading this review.  The game does have an epilepsy warning in the menu, but again as this is a shooter with bright flashy colors, we did not have any issues with any gamers with the flashes of light and colors from the game.  The game is not to hard to play but the difficulty does ramp up and the three bosses themselves do offer a challenge.  The game has a unique system where your health bar will refill when you are not shooting your weapon, so this is an interesting dynamic of gameplay as where if you stop shooting your weapon for a period of time, you may lose your power ups in the process and be at a disadvantage.  We personally like this as this adds more of a fun challenge to the game.  Another great thing that Task Force Kampus has is a leaderboard, this adds more fun for those that want to challenge in your gaming family to see who can obtain the best score on their run.  We here at the office had a great time doing this as in the game there are characters called cocoos, they add to your score and collect enough, and you can get more firepower for your ship.  Task Force Kampas also adds different ships that you can use.  Each ship has a special ability from more health, to firepower.  This give gamers to choose the right ship for their playstyle. There are also menu modifiers to change the look of the game which we felt was really cool also, so this adds more dept to the replay value to a game that already has a high replay value.  The only complain that we had was that the screen size was in a smaller top down.  Now this may have been done intentionally by the developers to give it a true arcade top down feel but outside of this, the game is very family friendly.  In our special needs game testing, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics, audio, or even controls, outside of a f-bomb being dropped in the final boss encounter in the background the game is very family and special needs gaming friendly. We feel that the game is a fun game and a game to have in your digital library.

Closing

With fast, frantic gameplay, fantastic techno/sync soundtrack and overall easy pick up and play controls and gameplay, Task Force Kampas is a great game for any SHMUP fans out there, a must have for your digital library.
