Supermarket Shriek

A kart racer in which you and a goat screaming through supermarkets to reach the level goals.  A unique style of kart racer when both main character and goat scream to control motion of the shopping cart.  The game offers a story mode as well as a “ghost” to race against, and multiplayer mode.

General Gameplay

Overall the game is a kart style racer in which you race inside supermarkets that have obstacles in them that block you from getting to the goal.  The Game Visuals for Supermarket Shriek are very clear and sharp.  The characters and backgrounds are very clear and easy to see on a big or small screen.  If anything, the characters are very animated when in motion.  The game colors are very bright and vivid where there are a lot of red, brown, greens, blues on the screen.  As the game does not support a colorblind mode, it is not needed as the game colors are easily seen on screen.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics as they were very family friendly for all to see.  The Audio for Supermarket Shriek is very cartoonish in its audio.  The game has background music is very game show in its nature with tunes that you would hear in a tv game show, however tit fits well for the action on the screen.  Also, the game sound effects are what you would expect in a kart racing style with bangs, dings and another thing associated with a kart racer.  The characters screams are what is center stage where you and the goat screams is what you would hear when playing the game.  The game has spoken dialog and there was nothing offensive in language heard in the game.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game audio as it was very family friendly.  Controls for Supermarket Shriek are very easy to use.  The left and right triggers are used to scream in the direction that you want the kart to move in, so for an example if you want to go left, then you would have the character scream to move left, and right screams to move right.  Both screaming at the same time will move the kart forward.  The game is designed to have the triggers move the character around (we had some issues with this in our playtesting, we will talk more about this in our Family Friendly section) As the game is an console exclusive, the standard controller is fine to use in the game.

“As a kart racer, Supermarket Shriek is a fun game, but frustrating controls and no ability to change them makes the game harder to control”

Family Friendly

As the game is available on the Xbox One Game Pass, we got a chance to review this as the game has a family friendly approach to its design, and overall game play.  The game offers a party mode for up to 8 players and the ability to use USB mics to play the game.  If you had to look at the game as a party game for families to play and have fun.  What our concern was that the controls.  Now as the controls for the kart is used by the left and right trigger to move the kart, it made it hard for some of our older gamers and special needs gamers to move the kart and because of this unique style of controller setup it made it hard for gamers to play and enjoy the game.  Now also another topic that came up is for hard core racing game fans is that this is not a racing game against other karts, but more of a game where you get the best time on each level.  Now for those that are racing fans in your gaming family that want a game like this with this unique control setup, they may enjoy it, but for those looking for a racing game, they may get bored.  Now to say that Supermarket Shriek is a bad game, it is not, it is a fun game but not for everyone.  In our special needs game testing, outside of the controller setup, there were no issues with the game graphics and audio.  The best advice that we can provide is to watch videos of the game and if you can get the Game Pass, download and give the game a try.  The game at the time of this review being written is free for Game Pass members.  Again, Supermarket Shriek is a family friendly game, but the control setup makes it hard to play the game.
