Gleylancer

As a pilot, you hijack a prototype fighter into enemy territory to take on their fleet and save your father and the universe.  With different weapons, enemies, and a revise shooter system Gleylancer is a great remaster for 2D shooter fans.

General Gameplay

Gleylancer is a remaster of the original 90’s shooter, but with lots of new upgrades for the modern console.  From upgraded controls to even a rewind feature in real time, this is a great shooter for both hardcore shooter fans as well new shooter fans.  Game Visuals in Gleylancer are the same from the original game.  Every detail from the pixels that you remember from the original game have been restored in the game.  The graphics are very easy to see on the screen as the 16-bit style of graphics are very detailed.  All the graphics from your ship to enemies, and backgrounds are very done and colorful to see in the game.  The story cut scenes are done well in an anime style and are easy to follow on the screen.  The games colors are bright, vivid, and easy to see, however in the game there is no colorblind mode, however it is not needed.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game visuals.  Audio in Gleylancer is done well.  As the game is a 90’s remaster version of the game, all of the original audio is in the game.  From the space opera style of background music to weapons fire, all is done very well in the game.  Gleylancer is in 5.1 surround sound environment as well in stereo 2.0 and the game sounds great in either environment. We recommend that you play the game with a gaming headset as you can best enjoy the sounds from the game but either environment is fine to hear the game.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the sound, or any other audio in the game.  Controls in Gleylancer are very simplistic.  As the game is a shooter, the controls for the game are very simple.  One button to fire the main weapon, another to change the speed of your fighter, and another for changing the fire pattern of your extra weapons.  Controls can’t get simpler then this.  As we reviewed the game on the console, the controls were perfect and the response was very fast, which is important for a game type like this.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game controls or controller settings.  As the game is on the console, there is no need for a special controller to play Gleylancer.

“A great remaster of the original game that is a great, short fun game for any shooter fans out there.  The rewind feature alone is great for gamers to correct any mistakes that they make in the game”

Family Friendly

Gleylancer back in the 90’s was a great game back then.  A great solid shooter with an interesting weapon system, smart enemy AI and a great challenge for the game, and with this remaster everything that made this a gem, is still there.  One of the things about shooters that can make or break the game is how fun and challenging the game needs to be.  A simple easy shooter can make it and play and done and it just sits, or a over challenging shooter can frustrate gamers and they will also shelf the game, this is where Gleylancer found a great balance in the gameplay.  With the ability to change your weapons fire pattern on the fly as well great power up pickups helps you be more prepared to face the challenges in each level.  This is a fun part of the game is to choose what weapon will work best for each level, and not like most games, each power ups have a place where they can either help or hurt you in your gameplay.  The ability to change your speed of your fighter is also great as there are parts of the game where this is necessary to do to better to navigate your fighter. Another great feature is the rewind featured.  If you get shot down, you can rewind your gameplay to where you can rethink your stance and then make your correction to not get shot down, this is a great feature for novice gamers to enjoy the game in more challenging levels and not feel that they are overpowered and outgunned.  The soundtrack for the game is fantastic and fits well with the game.  All of the midi sounds from the original is here and even with the remastered it fits well in the game.  From the weapons fire to everything else in the game is done well.  Now for some more experience shooters, they may find this game to simplistic and feel that this is one and done in playing, however with Gleylancer there are options that you can choose weather to play the easy mode or make the game more challenging. Overall Gleylancer is a great game for any shooter fans out there.  The only complaint that we had, and this is a minor one was that there was no couch co-op in the game.  Now as the original did not have this, this would have been a great addition to the game.  In our special needs game testing, we did not encounter any issues with the game visuals, audio or even controls and found the game to be very special needs gaming friendly.

Closing

Gleylancer is a great shooter for any shooter fans out there, with everything that made this game a classic that is in the game as well with a rewind feature it makes the game more approachable for all type of shooters out there.
