Ghostbutsters: The Video Game Remastered

Play as a recruit in a new story in the Ghostbusters series.  Play along side the original Ghostbusters and fight off old and new ghost as you try to figure out what is going on with the paranormal energy that is building up in New York City.

General Gameplay

The game is all about suiting up, grabbing the proton pack and catching ghost.  For any 80’s fans out there this is a dream come true for gaming as you play as an iconic Ghostbuster.  The game is a remastered version of the original game from the Xbox 360/PS3, the graphics have been upscaled to 4K and the game still retains its original voice acting cast from the original movie series.  The Game Visuals for Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered look the same from the previous game.  As the game is a remastered, the only thing that was updated was to be presented in 4K (However we had some issues with this and will cover it more in our Family Friendly section). The game is colorful and very vibrant in its colors on the screen as well showcasing neon colors for the ghosts.  The graphics are easy to see on the screen and the characters, ghosts and backgrounds are also very detailed from the series.  All the Ghostbusters on screen look like the real counterparts and the detail is great to see on the larger screen.  The ghost also is detail and showcase how funny to horrifying that they can be in the game.  The game does not support a colorblind mode, and for some parts of the game the red/green are harder to see, however this dose not hinder gameplay.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics.  Audio in Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered is very well done.  The game has all the iconic sounds from the proton packs blasting to the ghost screams, but where the game shines is in its voice acting.  The actual cast from the series reprise their roles and do a fantastic job of recreating the Ghostbusters universe in the game.  The game feels more like a movie with the voice acting and all the antics of the Ghostbusters are here in full form.  This is where the game shines as the game world with all the sounds and voice acting comes to life in the game.  The game is presented in a 5.1 surround sound setting, and we have to say that this is the way to experience the games audio in.  The game is also in stereo 2.0 as well but for those that have surround sound setups or even a great set of gaming headphones it is worth to hear the game audio.  Controls for Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remaster are very detailed.  There is a shoulder button for your primary weapon, a button used to deploy your trap, run, do basic actions, and other things to help you in the game.  The controls take some time to get use to but once you get the basic of what does what on the controller, you will do fine.  The layout for non-shooter fans may take some time to get use to but the game tutorial level helps with the adjustments.  The game can be played with the standard controller and there is no need for a special controller to play the game.  In our playtesting, outside of the tutorial, the game controller setting, and control were fine to play for any gamer.

“If you are a fan of the Ghostbuster series then you will love the game, but with repetitive gameplay and catch phrases, the game can get old really quick.”

Family Friendly

One thing that I will have to say that if you are fan of the Ghostbusters movies or even the original game then you will love the game as it captures the true essence of what is the Ghostbusters series and being a Ghostbuster, that being said, if you are regular gamer that is looking for a good game based on the movie series, you may be still looking.  The gameplay as fun as it can be very repetitive from level to level.  Yes, you do play as a Ghostbuster and use the iconic proton packs to catch ghost, but the game has so much more that it could have done to make it better.  As the game progresses, you are do the same thing repeatedly.  The game had a chance to branch off and offer different type of gameplay with new ideas, but they just rinsed, washed, and repeated the same gameplay.  Also, throughout the game, as good as the spoken dialog is throughout the game, it was at many times, reused with the same phrases over again.  By halfway through the game, most of our game testers were already bored of the gameplay and were ready just to see the ending and move onto another game.  To say that Ghostbusters is a bad game, which is not, it is a game that just does not reinvent itself to becoming a better one.  Do understand that this game is a remastered version of the original one that came out over 9 years ago.  That the graphics seem very muddied at times and did not even looked remastered, but this was a minor issue.  There was so much that the developer could have done with the game, however they did not.  What it boils down to is that if you are a fan of games that are 3rd person action shooters then you may enjoy the game, however if you or anyone in your gaming family is not a hard core fan of series like this then they may not fully enjoy the game.  The only recommendation that we would give for this game is for anyone that is a Ghostbusters fan and never played the original game back from the Xbox 360/PS3 days, outside of this best to pass up this game.  In our special needs testing, we did not see any issues with the game visuals, audio or controls for special needs gamers in your gaming family.

Closing

Revisiting the nostalgia of the Ghostbusters in a new adventure is a dream come true for Ghostbusters fans, but repetitive gameplay, broken audio and long and boring levels, all but destroy this dream for fans of the series.

Good

  • Original voice acting from the cast of the movie.
  • Different weapons both from the movie series and for the game makes gameplay more fun.

Bad

  • Repetitive levels and gameplay brings the game down.
  • Repeating of lines also becomes boring really quick in the game.
  • In game glitches breaks points in the game while busting ghost.
  • Short story and gameplay 4-6 hours.
6.5
