Capcom Arcade Stadium

Play over 30 arcade classic games from ranging from the 80’s to the late 90’s in this arcade retro collection.

General Gameplay

In this arcade collection from Capcom, you have the chance to play some of their greatest games from their arcade days.  The collections has 30 different games from the old school shooters, to the fighting series and 2D side scrollers from the golden age of arcade gaming.   The series offers a arcade to showcase the games as well a rewind mode for most games as well infinite lives, multiplayer and online leaderboards.  The Game Visuals are expected from what you would remember from the arcades.  Each graphic look for each game is done with the detail that you remember from the original game itself from the arcade.  The game offers the CRT look that some older monitors had in the arcades and other ways to view each game from changing the orientation of the game to the viewing angle of gameplay.  As each game is different from each other, the level to make sure that the original game graphics are there from the original source.  As the games are different, the colors on the screen are different depending on the game but overall the Arcade series does not offer a colorblind mode, however most colors are easy to see on the screen.  In our play testing, outside of dated content, there was nothing offensive that we saw during the review.  Audio in the Capcom Arcade Stadium is not that bad at all.  As the series is a collection of different games, all of the sound effects that you would expect to hear from the games that you play.  The overall Arcade area is nice to hear all of the games in the background at once to give to an old school feel of being in an arcade and hearing all of the sounds from each machine in demo mode.  As the games are all from the 80’s and 90’s era, most if not all games are presented in stereo 2.0 sound but all of the games in the collections are in the sounds that the games that you remember hearing in the original games.  In our play testing, we did not hear anything that would be offensive to younger gamers, however keep in mind as these games were debut and released during the 80’s and 90’s that there is some if anything little language in the game.  Controls in Capcom Arcade Stadium are varied depending on the game that you are playing.  Most shooters have the standard button for firing a weapon, a button for the special weapon and another button for a rapid fire for the primary weapon.  All games in the collection can be customized for each game.  So for those playing the Street Fighter games, you can customize each button layout for a game that used a 6 button layout, and so forth.  The controls are very easy to use and very pick up and play friendly for the games.  In our play testing, we did not encounter any issues with the game default controller setup for most of the games in the collection.  The controller settings are very family friendly and special needs gaming friendly.

“Capcom Arcade Stadium is a great collection of games from Capcom golden age of arcade gaming, there are some classics that are missing but overall this is a good collection to start off with for fans of the arcade games from Capcom

Family Friendly

Now this will be an interesting review as this review is more about the games and collection and confusing purchasing model that is set up, so we are going to cover this piece by piece to better help with the family friendly section of this review.  The look and feel of the game has an old school feel of walking into your local arcade.  From each game in the collection sounds playing in the retail demo mode to going into each cabinet and starting each game.  All of the classic look and feel are here and they are done with the feel that you are actually at your favorite game.  One of the nice aspects of each cabinet is the view that you can play the game in, from the ¾ view to the standard flat on screen to other options to give a true arcade classic feel to the game.  The side artwork that you can place is also a nice touch for the game.  The ability to adjust each game difficulty and starting lives makes it easier for most gamers to have an relaxing time with a game with little to no challenge, but you can also play the game in the default setting for more of a challenge.  Each game offers a online leaderboard where you can test your skills in each game to see if you are the best in the world let alone of your local arcade.  Capcom Arcade Stadium also offers in game points that you earn for finishing games that add towards your overall arcade score earning you more skins and other items to better decorate your arcade.  The vast selection of games that you can get from different priced packs are great but we felt that there were several games that were missing from the collection.  Now this can be something that Capcom is holding off on for a future DLC update but the majority of the selection of games are not that bad.  If anything for fans of 2D side scroller shooters will be very happy with this collection as there are some true treasures in the collection that are a great trip down memory lane for older gamers to revisit.  One cool feature for most of the games is the ability to change the speed for the game to either play slower or faster.  Now this is great for some games that move more slower to be more up to speed or for more faster moving game to be slowed down.  Another great ability is to rewind games, this is a cool feature in case you messed up that you can rewind the game and redo a section and get it right. Overall the game feels right and lives up to the feel of being at your favorite arcade playing the classics.  If anything this game is more aimed to the older gamers out there as the games are from several decades ago and most gamers will not recognize most of the games in the collection.  One of the things that we did not like was that the game are separated in more of the eras that the games were originally released vs more into the categories that the games should be in.  This may cause some frustration as you may want the games in one pack but are more forced to purchase another pack just for one game.  We would love to see a more of pick what you want to purchase vs volume packs in the future but maybe this will happen in a later update.  In our special needs game testing, we didn’t to run into any issues with the game visuals, audio, or even controls.  Capcom Arcade Stadium is very special needs gaming friendly.  Please keep in mind that most of the titles were released in the 80’s through 90’s so there will be some dated material in the game.

Closing

If you are fan of any of the Capcom games from the arcade era, then this is a fantastic collection to have.  With authentic gameplay and cool features, this is a must have collection for older gamers that want to relive their days in the arcade.
